Demand Media Selects Ankeena Networks to Accelerate Delivery of New Media While Reducing Infrastructure Costs

Leading Content and Social Media Optimizes Delivery Network with Media Flow Director

2010 NAB Show
LAS VEGAS – Ankeena Networks, a leading provider of media delivery systems powered by Ankeena’s patent-pending Media Flow Engine™, announced Demand Media®, a leading content and social media company, has selected Media Flow Director (MFD) to deliver compelling new media content and social media to its users. Ankeena MFD allows for high-performance 3-screen content delivery that provides the highest possible quality while reducing delivery costs.

Justin Newton, executive vice president of information technology, for Demand Media, said, “It is an integral part of our goal to make it as effortless as possible for customers to add new media content to their sites. The addition of Ankeena’s Media Flow Director allows us to improve quality of experience, at a significant cost reduction. One of the main selling points for MFD was that it will allow us to reduce our data center infrastructure, without compromising media quality.”

The explosive growth of online media and delivery has increased the amount of Internet traffic exponentially. To meet this demand, content providers have had to increase the number of servers within their data centers. The increase in servers has lead to increased Capex and Opex costs, through network support, power consumption, and cooling requirements.

MFD provides the highest performance density within the media delivery market, allowing for a 10:1 reduction in the number of servers needed to deliver the same amount of media. These capabilities allow MFD to generate up to a 70 percent reduction in Opex by lowering expenses associated with power, cooling, space, and network management. The software-based solution runs on standard x86 servers and uses adaptive streaming technology. Adaptive streaming allows viewers to enjoy videos and new media at the highest quality without buffering or jittering by dynamically detecting the available bandwidth and varying the delivery bit-rate.

“Demand Media owns some of the most well-known web properties that employ rich media and video content. This would normally result in an increase in servers to maintain quality and meet demand.” said Rajan Raghavan, CEO and co-founder of Ankeena Networks. “Ankeena’s MFD solves the problem of network expansion by providing a solution that can optimize content delivery more efficiently. This economical, yet comprehensive delivery platform enables companies such as Demand Media to create a flawless quality of experience and extend the boundaries of new media capabilities.”

Demand Media and Ankeena Networks will be speaking at a panel at NAB “How the Global Video Content Cloud Will Impact Your Business” on Tuesday, April 13, 4:00-5:15 PM. Ankeena Networks will also be showcasing Media Flow Director and its 3-screen delivery capabilities at the NAB show at booth number #SU9506EE in the Destination Broadband Pavilion. The exhibits will be taking place from Monday, April 12 through Thursday 15, 2010 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
