Compass Labs Announces Devavrat Shah as New Advisor

SAN JOSE, CA – Compass Labs, the leading social marketing platform powering ads and audience intelligence, today announced that Devavrat Shah, currently a Jamieson career development associate Professor with the department of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, where he has been teaching since 2005, has joined their Advisory Board. Mr. Shah is a member of the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) and Operations Research Center (ORC). His research focus is on complex networks analysis and large-scale statistical inference, recently developing an algorithm to predict Twitter trending topics hours before Twitter’s own algorithm, providing a new technique for analyzing fluctuations in data over time.

Shah was awarded the first ACM SIGMETRICS Rising Star Award 2008 for his work on network scheduling algorithms. He received the 2010 Erlang Prize from INFORMS which is given to a young researcher for outstanding contributions to applied probability and is currently an associate editor of Operations Research, Information Theory Transactions and Queueing Systems. Shah’s work has received coverage in popular press including New York Times, Forbes, TechReview, Gigaom and Reditt.

Compass Labs relies on the unique interactivity of social media and public social data to understand audiences and how best to deliver the right ad to the right person at the right time.”

Shah received his Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1999 with the Presidents of India Gold Medal – awarded to the best graduating student across all engineering disciplines. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2004, and his doctoral thesis titled “Randomization and Heavy Traffic Theory: New Approaches for Switch Scheduling Algorithms” was completed under supervision of Balaji Prabhakar. His thesis was selected as the winner of the George B. Dantzig best dissertation award from INFORMS in 2005.
