Google AdSense Retires AdSense for Domains, Shifts AdSense for Mobile to AdSense for Content

Earlier announcements from Google AdSense officially confirmed two moves that have been expected by many AdSense publishers. Read what they are and check if there are any steps that you should take.

AdSense for Domains will be retired. The schedule for complete product retirement is as follows:

– March 21: You’ll no longer be able to create new Hosted domains
– April 18: Hosted domains will become inactive and it will no longer be possible to earn from them
– June 27: Hosted domains will no longer be available in AdSense accounts.

AdSense for Mobile will move to AdSense for Content. As of this morning, the mobile content monetization through Google AdSense is a fully-integrated solution within the core AdSense for Content product.  The move was expected for quite some time, as the line between mobile content and standard web content becomes blurrier and blurrier. The single user interface for both standard web and mobile AdSense ads should facilitate ads creation and management for publishers, and facilitate better monetization for mobile web properties.

Next steps for AdSense publishers

If you have undeveloped domains that you wish to monetize, you can default to a domain parking provider. The Migration Guide will tell you just to proceed with the domain migration.

Google AdSense publishers who have AdSense for Mobile ad units set for “iPhones and other highend devices only” are requested to update their ad code as soon as possible. Effective immediately, the mobile ad unit sizes are available within the AdSense for content section of the AdSense interface. Those who choose to implement Google AdSense now will be able to continue monetizing all mobile content after May 1, 2012 without any disruption.

If you are a publisher using the AdSense for Mobile ad units set for “All Phones”, you will continue to be able to serve ads to both WAP phones and highend phones.
