Ads About Bad Ads: Video Contest

Adblock Plus Invites Filmmakers to Submit Videos for Grand Prize

COLOGNE, Germany – Adblock Plus, the open-source community project to block obnoxious online ads, announced a video contest to let budding filmmakers make an advertisement… about bad advertisements.

“As click-through rates have declined, advertisers get desperate and try to make more noise by making intentionally obnoxious and disruptive ads, which just further depresses click-through rates. We’re in a downward spiral, and we want to call attention to that and hopefully reverse it”

The goal of the video contest is to showcase how intrusive online advertising has become – and how much worse it could get – and to prompt discussions about how to reverse the spiral and make the Internet a better experience for everyone.

Adblock Plus believes, that the visualization of this message will help “casual” Internet users to understand the importance of content choice, which will help to improve the Web in general.

“As click-through rates have declined, advertisers get desperate and try to make more noise by making intentionally obnoxious and disruptive ads, which just further depresses click-through rates. We’re in a downward spiral, and we want to call attention to that and hopefully reverse it,” said Till Faida, co-founder of Adblock Plus. “We don’t dislike ads and we even encourage advertising that is done appropriately though our Acceptable Ads initiative. But the industry needs to change its current course.”

Adblock Plus is hosting the website TheCreativeChallenge.org to display contest rules and accept video submissions. In true open-source style, voting of entries will be done both by the community at large and by a panel of six professional judges that includes Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Matthew O’Neill, former Pixar executive Bruce Perens, documentary filmmaker Simon Klose, and others.

Prizes:

Adblock Plus will offer the contest winner a four-week filmmaking workshop at the International Academy of Film and Television on a tropical island in the Philippines. If the winner prefers, an alternative is to select the video equipment of their choice. See prize details here: http://thecreativechallenge.org/prizes/

Submissions will take place until the end of May, followed by the voting period. Winners will be announced at the beginning of July.

How to Enter:

Videos 30-90 seconds long can be submitted at the official contest website: http://thecreativechallenge.org/submit/. The contest is open to everyone worldwide above the age of 16, but the final deadline is May 31 at 11:59pm CET. Entry price is free. See full rules at http://thecreativechallenge.org/rules/
