BBC Deploys Digital Element’s IP Geolocation Technology to Manage Online Content Rights

IP geolocation technology used to ensure compliance with geographic rights

London, UK – Digital Element, the leading provider of IP geolocation technology, has today announced that the BBC has deployed its NetAcuity Edge™ IP geolocation technology to manage the geographic rights of its online TV and radio content.

The BBC is one of the world’s largest broadcasting organisations and provides a variety of online and offline content to audiences worldwide. The organisation is obliged to comply with geographic licensing rights for its streaming on demand service. Deploying real-time IP geolocation data enables the BBC to permit access to its content in licensed areas and restrict access where it is prohibited.

“It is imperative that the BBC ensures compliance with licensing agreements,” explained Matthew Wood, Head of Software Engineering for BBC Future Media, Online Technology Group. “By using accurate IP geolocation technology, we are able to ensure we abide by geographic licensing rights agreements.”

Charlie Johnson, Vice President, UK and Ireland, Digital Element commented, “We are pleased to be able assist the BBC in maintaining digital rights compliance for its online content. Deploying granular and highly accurate IP geolocation data ensures licensing requirements can be confidently met.’’

The BBC joins Digital Element’s other broadcasting clients such as Channel 5, Aertv, Videology, YouView, Disney, CNN, ESPN, Sony, CBS Interactive, ABC and Tesco’s Blinkbox.
