AOP Leads the Way in Preparation for GDPR Compliance and Introduces Best Practice Guide for Members

The Association for Online Publishing (AOP) will introduce a GDPR Good Practice Guide for its members to share collective insight and advice on compliance

London, UK: The Association for Online Publishing (AOP) has made a GDPR Good Practice Guide available to its members and will discuss the content at its next AOP CRUNCH event on 3rd May 2018

AOP’s CRUNCH is a series of events designed to promote discussion of industry challenges and help build a better future for premium publishers. The latest event, “GDPR and Beyond”, will see the AOP present its GDPR Good Practice Guide, offering advice on policies and actions that need to be taken both now and in the future to become and remain compliant.

The guide provides an overview of everything a publisher needs to prepare for GDPR, including the distinction between data controllers and processors, an outline of publishers’ uses of personal data, and data processing under GDPR.

Since May 2017, the AOP GDPR working group has been in discussions with publisher members to agree best practice around the new regulations. Recognising the need for expert advice, Nick Stringer – former policy consultant at IAB who has been heavily involved with EU policy on cookie laws and GDPR – has been introduced as a consultant, to help manage and shape the resources. By collating all possible publisher-related data use cases, a matrix has been created showing how to apply GDPR practices to each scenario.

The production of these resources represents an unprecedented level of collaboration by the industry body and its members to support publishers through the regulations. The guide has also been instrumental in shaping the IAB’s Consent Framework, helping provide clarity around different types of data purposes.

Richard Reeves, Managing Director at AOP commented: “Navigating your way through new regulation is daunting, which is why we want to provide our members with as much relevant support as possible. During the “GDPR and Beyond” event, we will launch the new resource that has been created through extensive research by our leading GDPR experts and explain how to use the resource as a guide for GDPR compliance. We anticipate our members will be well-placed to take the lead in data protection, and in so doing, further underline their reputations as responsible and trustworthy publishers.”

The event on 3rd May will comprise of a series of presentations outlining what’s next for premium publishers after GDPR and the ePrivacy regulation, panel discussions, debates, Q&A sessions, as well an introduction to the guide. As well as covering the GDPR, Simon Morrissey from Lewis Silkin will discuss the upcoming ePrivacy Directive (PECR) and the effect it will have on the industry.

The Good Practice Guide will be launched at AOP’s CRUNCH series, GDPR and Beyond on 3rd May 8.30 – 11am, Prince Philip House, 3 Carlton House Terrace, St. James’s, London, SW1Y 5DG, and is available for AOP members to download here.
