Gannett announces executive appointments in US Community Publishing

MCLEAN, Va. – Gannett (NYSE: GCI) announced Samuel Martin has been named president and publisher of the Montgomery (AL) Advertiser. Most recently he was senior vice president/chief advertising officer for the Boston Globe. Cheryl Lindus, formerly president and publisher of the Montgomery Advertiser, joins The Star Press in Muncie, IN, as general manager.

At the Boston Globe, Martin was responsible for the integrated sales of the Boston Globe, Boston.com, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Globe Direct and Metro Boston. Prior to joining the Boston Globe, Martin was the senior vice president of sales at New Jersey Media Group. Martin previously worked for Gannett as senior vice president of marketing at The Cincinnati Enquirer from 1999-2002 and director of advertising at The News Journal in Wilmington, DE, from 1993-1999.

Martin has been an active member of the media industry including serving on the Newspaper Association of America Marketing Committee and the Display Federation Board of Directors.

Lindus, prior to joining the Montgomery Advertiser as president and publisher in 2008, was the advertising director at Gannett’s Springfield (MO) News-Leader and at The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, WV. Earlier she held other advertising positions at The Star Press.

In addition, Gene Williams, executive editor/general manager at The Star Press in Muncie, IN, has been named executive editor of the Courier-Post in Cherry Hill, NJ. Williams joined The Star Press as executive editor in 2007. Under his leadership, The Star Press twice won the general excellence award from the Hoosier State Press Association and a silver medal as the most improved newspaper from Gannett. He was named general manager of The Star Press in mid-2009. Williams spent his first years in the newspaper industry as a sports writer and as an editor for various newspapers and later helped start a small business portal for Netscape, a division of AOL.
