Majora Carter, Founder of StartUp Box, Sells the Conference Audience on Her Pitch to Bring More Tech Businesses into Low-Status Communities

NEW YORK – SheKnows Media, a leading women’s media company with more than 80 million unique visitors per month and 162 million social media fans and followers, announced the winners of the 2015 #Femvertising Awards and The Pitch competition at #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us.

“By creating a technology and entrepreneurial ecosystem in such neighborhoods, we simultaneously help individuals and families earn better incomes while diversifying the tech-talent pipeline. I look forward to working with the SheKnows Media team to bring greater awareness to this important initiative.”

Launched for the first time this year, the 2015 #Femvertising Awards honors pro-female advertising that challenges gender norms and unattainable beauty standards while increasing consumer loyalty and brand awareness. Nominees underwent review by a diverse and high-profile panel of 16 judges hailing from organization like the Clinton Foundations’ No Ceilings initiative, Equality Now, Adweek, Huffington Post and Forbes. Ultimately, the public chose the following winning campaigns via public vote:

In addition to voting for their favorite campaigns, individuals had the opportunity to submit the name of an empowering pro-female ad via the People’s Choice award. The winner of that award went to Sayfty for its Daily Business campaign.

The #Femvertising Awards also gave the teens and tweens who belong to Hatch, SheKnows Media’s innovative digital storytelling and media literacy program for kids, the opportunity to vote for their favorite ad, which went to Sport England for This Girl Can.

Finally, SheKnows Media gave L’Oréal Paris the Wildfire Award for its Women of Worth campaign, which has sparked an enormous amount of conversation and consumer support. The ad was nominated by FleishmanHillard & TogoRun.

“SheKnows Media is committed to proving that #Femvertising has a positive, lasting impact on the bottom line,” said Samantha Skey, SheKnows Media’s Chief Marketing Officer. “The 2015 #Femvertising Awards nominees are proof positive that taking a pro-female approach to marketing is not only the right thing to do for women and girls, but helps brands build a better, more loyal relationship with this all-important consumer group. Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists – we are honored to share these campaigns with our users and #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us attendees.”

All 2015 #Femvertising Awards winners have the opportunity to work with SheKnows Media on a branded content campaign that will be shared with its 80 million-plus users and extensive social network.

Tanya Joseph, Sport England’s This Girl Can Campaign Director, said of the company’s win, “Through This Girl Can, we’re trying to break down the fear of judgement barrier that women and girls feel when they exercise. We know that worries about appearance and ability affect girls as much as they do women, so for girls and young women who are part of SheKnows Media’s Hatch program to say our campaign has inspired them is a fantastic honor.”

Majora Carter Wins The Pitch

Majora Carter, Founder and CEO of StartUp Box, won The Pitch competition at #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us. In June, SheKnows Media launched The Pitch, an original video series that offers women entrepreneurs a comprehensive program to help them share their message at scale.

Carter, an urban revitalization strategy consultant and Peabody Award-winning broadcaster, is the mastermind behind StartUp Box – a movement to on-shore technology jobs in low-status communities. Her 60-second Pitch video and follow-on speech moved thousands of content creators, social media influencers, thought leaders and brand executives who attended the conference to vote in favor of her initiative. As a result, Carter will work with SheKnows Media’s marketing and video teams on a year-long branded content campaign worth $100,000.

“I am deeply grateful to The Pitch judges and all of the people at #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us who recognized the potential that StartUp Box has to change the lives of so many people who live in underserved communities across the country,” Carter said. “By creating a technology and entrepreneurial ecosystem in such neighborhoods, we simultaneously help individuals and families earn better incomes while diversifying the tech-talent pipeline. I look forward to working with the SheKnows Media team to bring greater awareness to this important initiative.”

The Pitch judges at #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us included: Kathryn Finney, Managing Director, digitalundivided; Courtney Nichols Gould, Co-Founder and Co-CEO, SmartyPants, Inc.; Ali Pincus, Founder, One Kings Lane; JJ Ramberg, MSNBC’s “Your Business” host and Founder, Goodsearch; and Mimi Valdés, Chief Creative Officer, I am OTHER.

The judges and conference attendees also heard from the following Pitch contenders during the Saturday, July 18 keynote:

Beyond the conference, The Pitch is an ongoing content channel, regularly debuting new videos that feature 30- to 60-second pitches by women entrepreneurs and activists. Pitch participants, in consultation with the SheKnows Media team, fine-tune their Pitch, which is then professionally produced via the company’s in-house video studio. The Pitches are promoted to SheKnows Media’s vast audience, allowing users to comment, share and show their support. The Pitch is open to women with non-profit and for-profit ideas alike.

“Given SheKnows Media’s vast audience and social network, as well as the entrepreneurial spirit so many of our users have, it was incumbent upon us to create a platform for women to share their business visions and gain support,” Skey said. “That’s why we launched The Pitch, where female entrepreneurs gain the resources, mentorship and audience they need to refine their business proposition and product offering. We are thrilled for Majora and want to congratulate all of the women who participated in The Pitch at #BlogHer15: Experts Among Us.”
